Early Life
Tim Walz grew up in rural Nebraska and graduated from Butte High School. Walz was selected to teach in the People’s Republic of China from 1989-90, where he became a part of one of the first government-approved groups of American teachers to work in Chinese high schools. Upon his return to Nebraska, Tim served full time in the Army National Guard while teaching and coaching at a local high school. He met his future wife, Gwen Whipple, while teaching at the same school.
Career
In 1996, Tim and Gwen moved to Mankato, Minnesota, where they began teaching and coaching at Mankato West High School. Tim helped coach the football team that won the school’s first state championship. He retired from the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion of the Army National Guard in 2005 after 24 years of service.
Tim Walz won his first election to the United States House of Representatives in 2006, representing Minnesota’s First Congressional District. He was re-elected for another 5 terms, serving until 2019. During his tenure in Congress, Walz worked on important bills such as the Farm Bill, the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System, Minnesota Highway 14, and the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston (MN).
